Beach Volleyball Advances to MPSF Semifinal

Huntington Beach, Calif. - No. 2 seed UCLA lost to No. 3 seed Texas 3-1 but rebounded to defeat No. 5 seed California 3-0 to advance to Friday's semifinal against Stanford at the MPSF Tournament at Spiker Beach.
In the elimination match against California on Thursday afternoon, the Bruins took control early by winning the first set on all five courts. Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd earned UCLA's first point on court 1 with a 21-14, 21-19 victory over Emma Donley and Portia Sherman. Alexa Fernandez and Harper Cooper followed shortly thereafter with a 21-16, 21-15 win over Mila Vugrincic and Jenna Colligan on court 3. The Bears rallied on court 5 to take it to a third set, but Kenzie Brower and Mallory LaBreche were able to clinch the match for the Bruins with a 21-13, 20-22, 15-10 win over Elle Evers and Bella Adishian.
Earlier in the day, the Bruins dropped the first set on all but court 3, leading to a 3-1 loss to the Longhorns. Texas took a quick 2-0 lead on straight-set wins on courts 2 and 5. On court 4, Ava Williamson and Jesse Dueck fought off two match points in the second set that would have won the match for the Longhorns, forcing a third-set tiebreaker. On court 3, Fernandez and Cooper put UCLA on the board with a straight-set win over Emma Grace Robertson and Lily Davis, 21-18, 22-20. Texas won the match on court 1 soon after, with Brecht Piersman and Katie Hashman defeating Perez and Boyd, 21-17, 17-21, 15-10.
The Bruins will face No. 1 seed Stanford in Friday's semifinal at 8am PT. The winner will advance to the championship match at 10:15am against the winner of the Texas/USC semifinal.
