Bruins Drop Series Opener at Washington, 8-0
May 14, 2026 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team dropped the series opener on Thursday night, falling 8-0 to Washington at Husky Ballpark.
The Bruins (46-6, 26-2 Big Ten) suffered just their second conference loss of the season and their first defeat in a series-opening game. This also marks UCLA's first road defeat in 2026.
UCLA was limited to three hits, matching a season low, and was shut out for only the second time this year. Payton Brennan led the offense with a pair of hits, while Mulivai Levu recorded the Bruins' only other knock.
Roch Cholowsky was hit by a pitch for the 23rd time this season, making him the new UCLA all-time single-season hit-by-pitch leader.
Washington (23-29, 12-16 Big Ten) was powered by a two-homer performance from Colton Bower, who drove in three runs and scored three to pace the Huskies.
UCLA put runners in scoring position with fewer than two outs in both the first and fourth innings but were unable to cash in. Washington capitalized in the bottom of the fourth when Bower lifted a line drive just over the left-field wall for a solo home run, giving the Huskies the lead.
Washington then broke the game open with a five-run fifth, using four hits including Bower's second homer of the night to extend the advantage to six.
The Bruins return to Husky Ballpark tomorrow at 6 p.m. PT for game two of the series. The matchup will air nationally on Big Ten Network.
