West’s Four-Hit Day, Go-Ahead Slam Lift No. 1 UCLA Past No. 13 Oregon, 9-6
May 10, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Trailing by five runs after four innings, the No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team mounted a relentless comeback, erupting for eight unanswered runs, punctuated by Dean West's eighth-inning go-ahead grand slam, to secure a 9-6 win over No. 13 Oregon and clinch the series.
West was the undeniable star for the Bruins (46-5, 26-1 Big Ten), turning in a four-hit performance that included the go-ahead slam in the eighth. The UCLA left fielder also robbed a grand slam in the fourth, impacting the game on both sides of the ball. He finished with four RBIs and two runs scored in a standout afternoon.
UCLA struck first in the opening frame, but the Ducks (36-14, 18-9 Big Ten) answered in the third with the tying run, then surged ahead with a five-run fourth.
From there, the Bruins took over. UCLA chipped away with two runs in the sixth, added another in the seventh, and then exploded for five in the eighth to storm back and lock up the series-clinching victory.
Roch Cholowsky crushed his Big Ten-leading 21st home run of the season in a two-hit performance. The UCLA shortstop mashed three home runs over the weekend to maintain his lead atop the conference's home run list.
Payton Brennan enjoyed a three-hit day at the plate, scoring two runs in the contest.
Roman Martin and Will Gasparino each drove in a run as part of their 1-for-4 afternoons. Cashel Dugger came up with an RBI single and Aidan Espinoza delivered a clutch base hit off the bench in the eighth.
The UCLA bullpen shined for the final five innings as Angel Cervantes, Cal Randall, Zach Strickland, and Easton Hawk combined to shut out the Oregon offense to keep the Bruins within striking distance. Cervantes faced just one batter over the minimum in two scoreless frames, Strickland earned his sixth win of the year, and Hawk closed it down in the ninth for his 13th save of the year.
UCLA clawed back two runs in the sixth, starting with Cholowsky's towering 467-foot solo blast. The Bruins then mounted a two-out push when Brennan ripped a single to right, and Gasparino followed by smoking a double into the left-field corner to bring him home, trimming the deficit to three.
Cholowsky pulled UCLA even closer in the seventh, ripping an RBI single to left to bring the Bruins within two.
UCLA's comeback push set up a dramatic eighth inning. It started with Brennan shooting a single through the right side, and with two outs, Dugger kept the inning alive with a base hit that moved Brennan to third. Pinch-hitter Espinoza then delivered in the clutch, lining an RBI single to bring the Bruins within one.
Moments later, Phoenix Call was hit by the first pitch he saw, loading the bases for West, and the Bruins' leadoff man made it count. West crushed a 1-1 pitch to right-center for a bases-clearing grand slam, sending Jackie Robinson Stadium into a frenzy.
In the ninth, Hawk slammed the door with a perfect inning to secure the series for UCLA.
The Bruins will prepare for their final Big Ten Conference series of the season when they travel to Washington for a three-game set beginning on Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be nationally broadcast on Big Ten Network.
