No. 9 UCLA Falls at No. 18 Cal, 6-1

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team was defeated by No. 18 Cal Friday, 6-1, in a non-conference match at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Gabby Andrews recorded the lone point for the Bruins with a victory on Court 5 in singles play.
In doubles action, Cal's team of Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic defeated the Bruins' Terri Fleming and Alaina Miller on Court 2, 6-1, to take an early edge. Alexis Nelson and Stephane Lin then clinched the doubles point for the Golden Bears on Court 3, 6-3, over Gabby Andrews and Kristin Wiley.
The Bruin misfortune carried into singles play, as No. 2 Ena Shibahara dropped her first dual-match decision of the season on Court 1. Karla Popovic's 6-3, 6-3 victory pushed the Bears' lead to 2-0. Cal's Denise Starr defeated Fleming on Court 2, 7-5, 6-2, to put the Bruins on the brink of elimination. No. 90 Hauger then put the Bruins away with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Miller on Court 3.
With the match decided, the teams played out the remaining singles contests. Maya Jansen rode Cal's momentum into a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (5) win over the Bruins' Jada Hart on Court 4. A 10-point tiebreaker also decided the outcome on Court 5, where Gabby Andrews secured the Bruins' first point of the day. The sophomore defeated Maria Smith, 6-1, 7-6, 1-0 (10) and is now 6-0 in singles play on the dual-match season. On Court 6, Lin dispatched Wiley, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, to end the day's play.
The Bruins will hit the courts again Sunday when they host No. 12 Pepperdine. Previously scheduled for Feb. 17, the match was postponed due to rain. Play will begin at 2:00 p.m.
