Bruins Fall to California, 33-7

November 25, 2023 | Football

LOS ANGELES โ€“ UCLA lost to California, 33-7, on senior night on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.

Bruin quarterback Dante Moore threw for one touchdown and was 23-for-38 passing with 266 yards. Logan Loya finished the night with nine catches for 88 yards and one receiving touchdown in the loss for UCLA (7-5, 4-5).

Cal (6-6, 4-5) opened the scoring with back-to-back field goals to take a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter before UCLA's defense forced two turnovers in a row.

After the Bruins failed to convert on fourth down, the UCLA defense stepped up and forced a turnover of their own on the ensuing possession. Safety Kamari Ramsey picked off Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza on the UCLA 35 yard line to get the ball back for the Bruins. The interception was the first of Ramsey's collegiate career.

UCLA missed a field goal on their next drive, but the defense then forced another Cal turnover. Laiatu Latu hauled in UCLA's second interception of the night and returned it for 21 yards to the Cal eight yard line to put the Bruins in prime position to take the lead with 6:25 left in the half.

The Bruins cashed in 42 seconds later when Moore fired a laser to Loya for a five-yard touchdown, taking a 7-6 lead with 5:43 to go in the half. The touchdown reception was the fifth of the season for Loya.

Cal instantly responded with a kickoff return for a touchdown on the next play to take a 13-7 lead. ย

After a Moore fumble on the next UCLA possession, the Golden Bears scored with just 10 seconds remaining in the half when Mendoza found Hunter for a 14-yard touchdown pass to give Cal ย 20-7 lead heading into halftime.

The Bruins defense came out strongly to start the second half, forcing two punts on Cal's first two possessions of the half, but the offense could not cash in.

The Golden Bears tacked on a 32-yard field goal to begin the fourth quarter, taking a 23-7 lead. Cal added another touchdown a few minutes later to take a 30-7 lead with 13:35 left in the game. Cal then converted a 20-yard field goal attempt with 3:35 remaining to earn the 33-7 win on Saturday night.

The Bruins will find out their bowl game opponent on Sunday, December 3.
