No. 4 Softball Cruises to Two More Wins at Mary Nutter
February 22, 2025 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The No. 4 UCLA softball team won two more games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Big League Dreams Sports Park on Saturday, defeating Baylor, 6-2, and No. 10 Arkansas, 9-1, in six innings.
The Bruins (14-1) improved their record this week to 5-0 with four of those wins coming against ranked competition. On the season, UCLA is 7-0 against top-25-ranked foes.
Freshman third baseman Kaniya Bragg recorded two hits and two runs in each of the two contests. In game two versus the Razorbacks (14-1), Bragg hit the walk-off winner with an RBI single to right field to hand Arkansas its first loss of the season.
"I took a deep breath and stayed calm and focused on seeing the ball deep and taking it to the right said," said Bragg about the approach in her final at-bat. "I stuck to my gameplan and was able to have success with it. The feeling of the team rallying around me was so amazing. I know I am where I should be because this is my family."
Bragg boosted her season batting average to .350 and ranks second among UCLA freshmen with eight RBI, trailing shortstop Aleena Garcia.
Game One – UCLA 6, Baylor 2
Freshman Addisen Fisher got the ball to lead the Bruins in the circle for the second straight game after earning the win in a showdown with No. 5 Tennessee on Friday. Fisher opened the game by retiring the first eight batters she saw, including five by way of strikeout.
The Bruins scored the first runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the third off Baylor starter Lexie Warncke. Freshman Rylee Slimp recorded the first of her three hits in game one with a single to right field. One batter later, senior designated player Savannah Pola squeaked a two-run homer inside the right field foul pole for her second longball of the season. Pola finished the game 2-for-4 and went on to record two more hits in the night cap versus Arkansas.
Through 15 games this season, Pola ranks second on the squad with a .438 batting average (21-for-48) and 12 RBI and leads UCLA with six doubles.
The Bears (7-8) cut the lead in half the very next inning to 2-1. Fisher hit Baylor's No. 3 hitter Shaylon Govan with a pitch to put a runner aboard. Govan's pinch runner moved up to second base on a wild pitch by Fisher, marking the Bears' first runner in scoring position of the game. First baseman Abi Flores finished the at-bat with a base hit to center field to bring home the runner from second.
UCLA hit for the cycle and scored four more runs in the fifth inning to blow the game wide open. Freshman catcher Maggie Daniel launched an 0-1 delivery over the center field wall for the first home run of her collegiate career. Two singles by Rylee Slimp and Pola and a wild pitch put two in scoring position for Bragg. The freshman from Garden Grove, Calif. doubled to the left center wall to stretch the lead to 5-1. The next batter, Seneca Curo, hit a triple down the right field line that flew passed the outstretched glove of Ashlyn Wachtendorf for the final tally of the inning.
Govan chipped into the lead with a towering solo homer to left field in the top of the sixth.
Junior Taylor Tinsley entered the game to relieve Fisher in the seventh. Tinsley retired the side on 18 pitches and notched one strikeout. With the win, Fisher is now 4-0 with 1.93 ERA to start her UCLA career.
Game Two – UCLA 9, Arkansas 1 (6 inn.)
For the second day in a row, junior Jordan Woolery hit a three-run bomb of a top-10 opponent, this time in the third inning against Arkansas to firmly put UCLA ahead 4-0. Woolery leads the team with six homers, 22 RBI and a .442 average (19-for-43) this season.
Woolery has seen much success in Palm Springs over her three-year career. Over 16 games at the Mary Nutter, Woolery has totaled 22 RBI and six home runs.
Sophomore starting pitcher Kaitlyn Terry pitched her second complete game of the tournament, going 6.0 innings with six strikeouts and five hits and one walk allowed. With the win, Terry's record moved to 8-1 and her ERA at a minuscule 0.99 over 42.1 innings.
Graduate outfielder Jessica Clements plated the Bruins' first run of the game earlier in the third inning on an RBI single through the right side. Clements finished the game 3-for-3 with a career-high-tying three runs scored. The performance also marked the 15th three-hit game of her career and second of the season.
"It's truly been magical to be a part of this team and watching us compete," Clements said. "This team is gritty and will fight to the last pitch. Winning is fun, but how we do it and the way we do it is even better. We are all about the process, not the outcome."
Clements later drove in the first two of four runs in the game-deciding sixth inning.
