No. 5 Softball Goes Slugging in 10-2 Win over UC Riverside

LOS ANGELES โ The No. 5 UCLA softball team recorded a season-high 15 hits in a 10-2 mercy-rule victory over UC Riverside in six innings to close the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium on Sunday.

For the first time in program history, the Bruins (5-0) have strung together five straight run-rule victories to open the season. Today's contest against the Highlanders (2-3) marked the first time in 2025 the Bruins had allowed a run. In total, UCLA has outscored its opponents 44-2 through five games.

Six of UCLA's 15 hits went for extra bases โ five doubles and one home run. The top three batters of the Bruins' lineup went a combined 6-for-11 with two RBI apiece.

Four Bruins notched multiple hits on Sunday. Graduate transfer Jessica Clements, a two-time Big West Batting Champion at Cal Poly, led UCLA going 3-for-3 at the plate. Clements' last hit was a two-RBI double in the right-center gap in the sixth inning to score the walk-off runs.

Senior infielder Savannah Pola recorded her fourth straight multi-hit performance (2-for-2, 2B). Pola leads UCLA with a .692 batting average (9-for-13), 1.077 slugging percentage and three doubles.

UCLA put up four runs off five hits and an error in the first inning. Pola plated the first run of the ball game on a double to left field to bring home Clements. On the very next pitch, junior Jordan Woolery homered to right center to push the lead to 3-0.

Addisen Fisher started in the circle for the second straight day after starting the first of the Bruins' two games yesterday. Fisher struck out seven en route to earning her second win of the year. The Bend, Ore. native allowed four hits and two earned runs.

UC Riverside scored its only runs of the game in top of the third inning. First baseman Haley Saole singled in a pair with a single through the 5-6 hole.

Kaitlyn Terry, who pitched a one-hit shutout the previous night, recorded the first extra-base hit of her career on an RBI double in the bottom half of the third to extend UCLA's lead to 5-2.

Senior pitcher Jada Cecil entered the circle in relief in the fifth inning for her first outing of the season and first since March 2024. Cecil, the 2022 Big West Pitcher of the Year as a freshman at UC San Diego, was marvelous against her former conference foe UC Riverside. She faced the minimum and struck out four in her 2.0 innings, and K'd the side in the top of the sixth inning.

The Bruins tallied four hits, including three doubles, in their four-run bottom of the sixth. Grant opened the frame with a double to right center and traded places with the next batter, infielder Seneca Curo, who doubled to left center. Jayla Castroย singled in her second consecutive plate appearance, bringingย home pinch runner Rylee Pinedo to push the UCLA lead to 8-2. The performance marked the first multi-hit game of Castro's career.

UCLA will play in its fifth Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational next week from Friday, Feb. 14 through Sunday, Feb. 16. The Bruins open the tournament hosted at Eddie C. Moore Complex against No. 4 Oklahoma State on Friday at 12 p.m. (PT) on ESPN2.
