Salgado's Two-Homer Day Leads UCLA Past Nebraska, 11-3
March 15, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Behind AJ Salgado's two-homer day, the UCLA baseball team earned a dominant 11-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UCLA (15-4, 4-1 Big Ten) was kept off the board for the first three frames, but rallied for three runs in the fourth. The Bruins then erupted for six runs in the fifth, seizing a commanding lead over Nebraska (7-10, 1-4 Big Ten).
Salgado launched a pair of three-run bombs to rack up six RBIs in the first multi-homer game of his career.
Cashel Dugger provided another important swing, smacking a solo shot to leadoff UCLA's six-run fifth. This was the second long ball of the year for the Bruins' backstop.
Michael Barnett (5-0) dazzled in his first start of the season, racking up a career-high seven strikeouts over his five innings of one-run ball. The righty recovered after a shaky first inning, retiring nine straight batters during a three-inning stretch.
Barnett secured his fifth win of the year, joining an elite group of just three players nationwide to achieve five wins in 2025.
Blake Balsz went 3-for-4 after getting the start at the designated hitter spot, and Roman Martin enjoyed another two-hit day, recording his fourth multi-hit performance in the last six games.
UCLA has now won four straight games, including eight of its last nine contests.
Nebraska struck first in the first inning on an RBI double by Tyler Stone, giving the Cornhuskers what would be their only lead of the game.
The Bruins went to work in the fourth inning, posting a three-spot to go out in front. Mulivai Levu reached on an error, and Blake Balsz drew a walk, setting the stage for Salgado. UCLA's right fielder ambushed a 2-0 offering and smashed it over the scoreboard in right-center field for his first three-run home run of the game. The Bruins never relinquished the lead after Salgado's big swing in the fourth.
UCLA used a pair of big flies to rally for six runs in its next trip to the plate. Dugger ignited the Bruins' dugout when he smacked a solo home run to right field. Martin then delivered an RBI single before Payton Brennan kept the line moving with his run-scoring groundout. Salgado capped the six-run explosion with a line drive that clattered off the batter's eye in center field for his second three-run blast of the game.
The Bruins added to their cushion and reached double-digits after RBI singles from Levu and Brennan in the home half of the eighth.
The Cornhuskers mustered a run in the eighth and added one more in the ninth, but UCLA's bullpen brigade of Ryan Rissas, Luke Rodriguez, Josh Alger, and CJ Bott kept the bats in check to clinch the 11-3 victory.
The Bruins will go for the sweep of Nebraska in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT. Landon Stump will get the start for UCLA. The game will be available to watch on B1G+.
