UCLA Drops Middle Game to Maryland, 13-3
March 08, 2025 | Baseball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The UCLA baseball team fell to Maryland, 13-3, on Saturday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
UCLA (11-4, 1-1 Big Ten) saw its pitching staff surrender a season-high 13 runs to Maryland's prolific offense (8-6, 1-1 Big Ten), marking the first time this season it has allowed double-digit runs.
UCLA's Roch Cholowsky and Roman Martin had multi-hit performances, contributing to the team's 10 total hits which was just two fewer than Maryland.
The Terrapins broke the game open with a seven-run third inning and added two runs each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to secure a decisive victory. With the mandatory conference run-rule in effect and Maryland leading 13-3, the game was called after seven innings.
Both teams were kept off the board through the first two innings, but Maryland surged ahead in the third with a pair of two-run homers, a solo shot, and a couple two-out base hits to establish a 7-0 lead. This rally forced starting pitcher Ian May (1-1) out of the game after just 2.1 innings. The left hander was tagged with his first loss of the season after allowing five earned runs.
The Terrapins added two more in in the fourth to extend their lead to nine.
Dean West delivered an RBI single in the top of the fifth to get UCLA on the board. However, the hosts countered with another two-run blast, this time off the bat of Chris Hacopian, to push their lead to double-digits.
UCLA continued to battle at the plate, stringing together four hits to post a two-spot in the sixth. Mulivai Levu and Payton Brennan started the inning with back-to-back singles. Cashel Dugger's RBI groundout plated the first run, and Martin followed with an RBI single to drive in Brennan, making the score 11-3.
Maryland scored two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to ascend its margin beyond the 10-run threshold. After shutting down the Bruins the top of the seventh, the Terrapins came away with the run-rule victory, 13-3.
The Bruins conclude the series with the rubber match against Maryland tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT (12 p.m. ET). Landon Stump is slated to take the mound for UCLA. The game will be available for viewing on B1G+.
