UCLA Uses 11-Run Inning to Secure Series Win Over Maryland

March 09, 2025 | Baseball

COLLEGE PARK, Md.ย ย โ€“ย The UCLA baseball team used a massive second-inning surge to earn the 11-5 victory over Maryland in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
ย
After traveling over 2,300 miles to meet its opponent, UCLA (12-4, 2-1 Big Ten) marked its debut in the Big Ten Conference with a series win over Maryland (8-7, 1-2 Big Ten).ย
ย
The Bruins rallied from behind to earn a thrilling extra-innings victory over the Terrapins on Friday night before falling via the 10-run mercy rule on Saturday afternoon. UCLA bounced back with an emphatic offensive performance in the rubber match to clinch its first-ever series win over Maryland.
ย
UCLA nearly made history in its 11-run second, collecting nine hits as a team which was just one shy of the program record for the most hits in a single inning.
ย
Leadoff hitter Dean West enjoyed a three-hit day to lead the Bruins' offense, driving in three runs and scoring another.ย
ย
Homering for the second time in the series was Mulivai Levu, smacking a three-run blast in UCLA's 11-run second inning. This was the sixth big fly of the season for the first baseman, drawing level with Roch Cholowsky for the team-high.
ย
Roman Martin banged a pair of hits for his third consecutive two-hit day, raising his average from .190 to .264 during the three-game set. Blake Balsz and Phoenix Call also recorded multi-performances on the afternoon.
ย
Balsz and Martin led off explosive second inning with back-to-back base hits before AJ Salgado's hard-hit grounder forced an error from the Maryland second baseman, loading the bases for Cashel Dugger. UCLA's backstop drew a walk to bring home the first run of the game before Call roped a double down the left-field line to score a pair. West then lifted a blooper that dropped in to score two more.
ย
Cholowsky drew a walk to set the stage for Levu, who launched a three-run homer over the batter's eye. However, the Bruins were not done yet, as Balsz hit his second single of the inning before Dugger, Call, and West strung together three straight hits to cap UCLA's 11-run explosion.
ย
The Terrapins got a run back in the third, scored once in the fifth, and added another in the sixth to make it an eight-run deficit.ย
ย
Michael Barnett relieved starting pitcher Landon Stump with one out in the fifth. Stump allowed four hits and two earned runs through 4.1 innings of work. The right hander struck out the side in the third frame and finished his day with four total punch outs.
ย
Maryland continued to battle when a two-out two RBI from Michael Iannazzo cut UCLA's lead to six after seven innings played.
ย
UCLA's offense stalled after the huge second frame, going hitless until Martin's single in the top of the ninth. The bullpen stiffened, however, as Jack O'Connor tossed a scoreless eighth and Ryan Rissas shut the game down in the ninth to allow the Bruins to earn the stress-free victory.
ย
Barnett (4-0) secured his fourth win of the season, putting him at the top of the Big Ten's win charts.
ย
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium to kick off a seven-game home stand, hosting UC Irvine on Tuesday, March 11. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be available to watch on B1G+.
