Grant’s Grand Night Powers UCLA to 7-4 Win over Washington
April 11, 2025 | Softball
LOS ANGELES – Junior first baseman Megan Grant homered twice with five runs batted in to lead the No. 8-ranked UCLA softball team to a series-opening 7-4 win over Washington in front of a sold-out crowd at Easton Stadium Friday evening.
The Bruins (38-5, 10-1 Big Ten), who improved their winning streak to 10 games, drove in all seven runs by way of three homers. The first of Grant's two blasts was a go-ahead grand slam, marking her third grand slam in UCLA's last four games and the sixth of her career.
Grant is now tied for the nation's lead in home runs with 20 this season (Bri Ellis, Arkansas). Grant also achieved a piece of UCLA history, tying Stacey Nuveman (1999) as the fastest Bruins to reach 20 home runs in a single season; both needed only 42 games. The Bay Area slugger's dominant season has cemented her place in UCLA's record books, becoming the 11th Bruin in program history to record a 20-homer season. She's needed only 102 at-bates to record her 20 homers and 66 RBIs this season and owns a 1.601 OPS.
UCLA's offense totaled six base hits and three walks. Grant has three multi-homer performances and four games with five-plus RBIs this season. Joining Grant with multiple hits was senior second baseman Savannah Pola who went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
UCLA jumped out to an early 6-0 lead off four hits and two walks in the first inning. The Bruins loaded the bases against Huskies (29-10, 7-3 Big Ten) starting pitcher Sophia Ramuno with back-to-back base hits from No. 1 and No. 2 hitters Jessica Clements and Pola and a walk to Jordan Woolery. Grant, the fourth straight hitter to reach base to open the ballgame, unloaded the bases for a 4-0 lead. After a walk to Kaniya Bragg, freshman catcher Sofia Mujica hit UCLA's second homer in the inning with a two-run shot.
Mujica's batterymate, Addisen Fisher, used the healthy run support en route to picking up a complete-game victory. Fisher, whose record now sits 12-0, is the only undefeated freshman pitcher left standing in the country. Fisher opened her outing with six shutout innings before Washington put up four runs off four hits in the seventh inning. The Bend, Ore. native finished with five strikeouts.
Fisher totaled 11 three-ball counts to the 34 batters she faced and accumulated 142 total pitches (79 strikes) on the night.
With two aboard and two outs in the first, Fisher induced a groundball hit towards Pola at second base who collided with Alycia Flores for a runner's interference and the final out.
Fisher faced her biggest obstacle of the night in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and only one away. She got out of the jam by fielding a comebacker and throwing home for the second out. The final putout of the inning was a deep fly ball hit by Giselle Alvarez to the center field warning track.
Ramuno retired nine straight batters from the end of the second through the start of the fifth. Grant snapped Ramuno out of her groove with another line drive homer by Grant, this time to right-center, to make it a 7-0 lead.
Washington fought back in the seventh and finally broke through off Fisher. The Huskies opened the four-run frame with a walk to Ava Caroll and back-to-back singles from Alexis DeBoer and Jadyn Glab. With the bases loaded, Flores brought in a run on a sacrifice fly, scoring Caroll. Alvarez followed with a three-run homer, trimming UCLA's lead to 7–4.
Fisher then responded with the game-ending strikeout of Sophi Mazzola, earning her fifth strikeout of the game.
