History at the NCAA Championships
UCLA has won the NCAA title three times in program history: 2011, 2004 and 1991. Additionally, the Bruins have won the NCAA team stroke play title twice (2018, 2016) since the championship format switched to include match play in 2015.
The Bruins are making their 35th team appearance in the NCAA Championships and sixth in the last seven seasons. No UCLA student-athlete has won the individual NCAA stroke play title. Three Bruins have placed runner-up for the individual stroke play title: Emma Spitz (2022), Tiffany Joh (2008) and Christy Erb (1991).
UCLA's Remarkable Postseason Run
Just three weeks ago, UCLA went into the Big Ten Championships with a 54-58-4 record needing to finish seventh or better in order to qualify for the NCAA Tournament with a .500 winning percentage. UCLA accomplished exactly that, climbing one spot with the conclusion of the final round of the Big Ten Championships into seventh (+18) while USC fell two spots to ninth (+20).
A solid first two rounds by the Bruins at NCAA Charlottesville Regional (May 5-7) put them in second place and 10 strokes above the cut line heading into Wednesday's final 18. UCLA weathered through a +16 in the third round, dropping three spots and finishing seven strokes above sixth-place N.C. State to remain in the advancing top-5.
UCLA was also buoyed by key finishes earlier in their spring schedule. A podium finish for the first team title of the season at the Bruin Wave Invitational (Feb. 24-25) and a fourth-place spot at the highly-competitive PING/ASU Invitational (March 28-30) were essential in keeping postseason hopes alive.
Experience at the NCAA Championships
UCLA returns three players from last year's NCAA Championships runner-up squad: Tiffany Le, Meghan Royal and Natalie Vo. Seniors Zoe Antoinette Campos and Caroline Canales also returned for the start of the 2024-25 season, but left mid-season to embark on their professional careers.
Royal and Vo are the only two players in UCLA's lineup this week that was also in last year's NCAA Championships rotation. Royal will be serving as the Bruins' alternate to start the tournament while Le will be making her NCAA Championships debut.
Royal tied for 39th (+8; 75-69-77-75) in the stroke play portion of the 2024 NCAA Championships and won each of her singles matches versus Texas A&M (quarterfinals) and Oregon (semifinals) to help the Bruins reach the finals. Royal was named to Golfweek's All-Match Play Team for her performance.
Vo tied for 45th (+10; 74-74-75-75) in stroke play and also won her first two singles matches.
Including her years as an assistant, head coach Alicia Um Holmes has been on staff for 16 NCAA Championship appearances at UCLA.
Last Year's Runner-Up Finish
UCLA head coach Alicia Um Holmes completed a remarkable first season in 2023-24, resulting in a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships, four team stroke play wins and numerous individual accolades and records. Um Holmes was awarded the Golfweek Women's Coach of the Year for the team's success. She was also a finalist for WGCA National Coach of the Year.
UCLA was victorious in Um Holmes' second tournament as head coach at the Windy City Collegiate Classic where the Bruins ousted nine top-25 teams with a score of -32, 832 to tie the lowest 54-hole mark in program history. UCLA had a stretch of three consecutive wins to begin the spring at The Match in the Desert, the Nanea Pac-12 Preview and The Show. The four wins were the most for the program since the 2017-18 season. UCLA also secured its second straight Battle for the Bell title over crosstown rival USC in the fall with a convincing 4-1 victory. In postseason play, UCLA placed fourth at both the Pac-12 Championships and NCAA Las Vegas Regional to clinch its spot at the NCAA Championships.
The Bruins' memorable postseason run began by making the eight-team cut line for match play at the NCAA Championships. UCLA toppled Texas A&M in the quarterfinals, 3-0-2, and Oregon in the semifinals, 3-1-1, before falling to top-seeded Stanford in the finals, 3-2. The result marked the fifth runner-up finish in program history.
