UCLA Powers Way to Regional Final
May 31, 2025 | Baseball
A seven-run second inning put the Bruins (44-16) in the driver's seat and they never looked back. Roman Martin muscled a grand slam to right field during the onslaught. Payton Brennan had three hits and drove in two runs. Mulivai Levu also knocked in a pair.
"It's been the offense I've seen all year. We've had a very consistent lineup with Roch [Cholowsky], Vai [Mulivai Levu], Roman [Martin], Peyton [Brennan], AJ [Salgado], Blake [Balsz], and Phoenix [Call]," said Head Coach John Savage. "They've been very consistent. We haven't had a lot of games where we've been shut down; that's why the Nebraska game was the game that stood out. Again, we've had a lot of good at-bats against a good pitcher. We continued that tonight."
UCLA will try to claim a super-regional spot Sunday at 7 p.m. PT. ASU and UC Irvine will meet at 3 p.m. PT in an elimination game to determine the Bruins' opponent. UCI defeated Fresno State 8-3 in Saturday's opener.
Ian May (7-3) earned the win in relief, giving up two earned runs on three hits in five innings of work. Jack Martinez (6-4) took the loss for the Sun Devils (36-23), who were the designated home team, surrendering seven earned runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.
AJ Salgado led off the second with a single and came around when Brennan lined a shot into the right-field corner. Brennan slid into third, then scored when Sun Devil second baseman Kyle Walker threw the ball away. The offense kept its foot on the gas, loading the bases for the heart of the order.

With two outs, Levu walked to bring in the next run. Then, a day removed from his four-hit performance that included a round-tripper, Martin unloaded on a Martinez offering for his ninth home run – second with the bases full – of the season. Martinez was driven from the game and a dozen Bruins ultimately came to the plate.
ASU also loaded the bases in its half of the second. Brandon Compton's sacrifice fly scored a run, but Stump induced a double play to end the rally there.
UCLA scored two more in the third, as the lineup turned over for the second time. Cashel Dugger's leadoff single became a run when Dean West doubled to the right-center gap. Roch Cholowsky then grounded one up the middle to score West.
The first two Sun Devils reached in the fourth, ending Stump's night. May allowed one inherited runner to score, but saw a double play turned in the process to clear the basepaths. The Bruins quickly got that run back in the fifth, as Levu cashed in Phoenix Call's double with a two-out base hit.
ASU's Isaiah Jackson, who was hit by a pitch to start his team's seventh inning, scored on a throwing error. UCLA responded once more in the eighth thanks in part to Levu's heads-up baserunning. After reaching by way of a fielding error, two wild pitches moved him to third. A Brennan groundout brought the run home.
The Sun Devils plated another leadoff baserunner in the ninth. Kien Vu singled before Jackson walked and both were brought in by a Brody Briggs double to complete the scoring.
