Brennan’s Three-Run Blast Sparks No. 1 UCLA to 8-3 Win
March 21, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team secured an 8-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium to lock up a series victory over Maryland.
The Bruins (20-2, 8-0 Big Ten) extended their winning streak to 14 games and remained perfect in conference play. Their 8-0 start marks the best conference opening in program history.
Payton Brennan's first inning three-run homer was the catalyst to UCLA's offensive effort that featured 10 total hits and saw eight of the nine starters reach base.
Dean West, Mulivai Levu, and Roman Martin each turned in two-hit performances, while Cashel Dugger and Dominic Cadiz added one hit apiece.
Wylan Moss (2-0) earned his second win of the year, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to drop his ERA to 0.40 across 22.1 innings pitched this season.
Easton Hawk handled the final four outs, striking out two to lock down his second save of the campaign.
Maryland jumped ahead in the first, taking a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI double from Rylen Stockton.
UCLA answered immediately, erupting for four runs on four hits in the home half of the first to jump in front. West and Levu set the table with back-to-back singles, and Martin followed by ripping a double into the left-center gap to bring home the Bruins' first run. Brennan then stepped to the plated and crushed the first pitch he saw for an opposite-field three-run homer to cap the four-run inning.
The Terrapins got a run back in the second when Aden Hill smacked a solo home run to right field.
Maryland threatened again in the third, but the Bruins cut down the would-be run with a textbook relay. A ball was driven over Will Gasparino's head in center rolled to the warning track, where he gathered it and fired to Roch Cholowsky in shallow center. Cholowsky turned and delivered a strike to the plate, nabbing the runner attempting to score from first base for the inning's final out.
UCLA replied with two runs in the bottom of the third to restore its four-run cushion. Levu and Martin opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Brennan moved both runners into scoring position with a groundout. Gasparino followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Levu, and Dugger bounced a single up the middle to score Martin.
The Terrapins scratched across another run in the fourth on an RBI double, a knock that also chased starter Michael Barnett from the game. Moss came on in relief and recorded the final two outs to escape the inning without further damage.
UCLA added another run in the fourth when Martin drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Phoenix Call, who had reached on an error to open the inning.
Maryland threatened in the eighth, loading the bases, but UCLA pulled off another improbable escape. Chris Grothues, Cal Randall, and Hawk each recorded an out in the inning, combining to strand all three runners and snuff out the rally.
UCLA tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Cholowsky ripped a double down the left-field line to score Call and push the lead to five.
In the ninth, Hawk allowed two runners to reach but stranded both without giving up a hit, securing his second save of the season.
