No. 1 UCLA Falls to No. 13 Oregon, 9-6
May 09, 2026 | Baseball
The Bruins (45-5, 25-1 Big Ten) jumped out with a four-run first inning, but saw that lead disappear quickly as Oregon answered with four in the second. UCLA briefly regained control in the third on Will Gasparino's solo shot, his 19th of the season, before the Ducks (36-13, 18-8 Big Ten) manufactured the tying run in the seventh.
The loss marks UCLA's first setback in conference play this season and its first Saturday defeat of the year. The Bruins had matched the Big Ten record with 27 straight league wins, tying Illinois' 1911 mark.
After the stretch, Roch Cholowsky briefly put UCLA back in front with the second of his two home runs, but Oregon surged ahead for good with a four-run, two-out rally in the eighth.
Cholowsky's two blasts, giving him 20 homers on the season, move him into the top spot on the Big Ten home run leaderboard. Gasparino added his 19th homer as part of a two-hit night, while Roman Martin, Payton Brennan, and Cashel Dugger each recorded a hit.
On the mound, Ian May provided a bright spot in relief, firing 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
UCLA came out swinging with a four-run first, seizing control of the contest right away. Cholowsky set the tone by unloading on a no-doubt 426-foot blast to left-center to open the scoring. Levu followed with a walk, and after two outs, the Bruins strung together three straight RBI knocks. Brennan ripped a double down the left-field line to score Levu, Gasparino smacked a single to left to bring in Brennan, and Dugger lined another RBI single to left to cap the four-run burst.
Oregon replied with a four-spot in the second, pulling even behind a three-run blast from Naulivou Lauaki that keyed the rally.
The Bruins restored their lead in the bottom of the third when Gasparino launched a towering moonshot to left-field for a solo shot. This was the 19th home run of the season for the UCLA center fielder.
Oregon pulled even in the seventh, manufacturing the tying run without a hit by taking advantage of a walk and a balk to make it 5-5.
Cholowsky mashed his second homer of the game in the bottom half of the inning, lining a ball off the batter's eye in center field to give UCLA the lead right back.
UCLA's trouble in the eighth turned into a full Oregon surge, as the Ducks mounted a two-out rally to reclaim the lead. A near-miss on a diving attempt in the outfield allowed the tying run to score, and a subsequent error loaded the bases to keep the inning alive. Jack Brooks delivered the decisive blow, driving a bases-clearing double into the gap to put Oregon up by three.
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium for a senior day rubber match at 12 p.m. PT. Live coverage will be available on B1G+.
