UCLA Takes Down Cal Poly, 3-2, in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES โย Roman Martin's go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the UCLA baseball team over Cal Poly in the season opener on Friday night inside Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Martin came up with the biggest swing of the day in the home half of the seventh, winning a nine-pitch battle by smacking a single to left field to bring Dean West around to score from second base.

UCLA's bullpen shut the door over four total frames, holding Cal Poly (0-1) scoreless while surrendering just two hits. Jack O'Connor threw a scoreless inning in his collegiate debut and Justin Lee earned his first collegiate win after logging 1.1 hitless innings.

After making 52 appearances out of the bullpen in his first two seasons at UCLA, Cody Delvecchio got the nod to make his first career start on Friday night. The Mission Hill, Calif. was tabbed with the no-decision, but impressed in his 5.0 innings of work, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out four.

Freshman Wylan Moss toed the rubber for the first time and faced just one batter over the minimum. He struck out five of the six batters he faced to secure the five-out save.
