ย
In the final at-bat of the ballgame, Jarrod Hocking provided the heroics by working to a full count before drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring the winning run to home plate.
ย
The Bruins (5-1) trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning and managed to push six runs across in the final two frames to snatch the victory.
ย
In the ninth, UCLA used a base hit, two hit-by-pitches, and three walks to complete the come-from-behind win.
ย
UCLA's bullpen was solid over the last five innings of the game, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Ryan Rissas had the longest outing, lasting 1.1 innings without allowing a hit.
ย
Chris Grothues saw his first action on the mound since May 20, 2023 after battling injuries for much of the last two seasons. The lefty tossed an inning of scoreless ball and faced just one batter over the minimum.
ย
CJ Bott and Josh Alger followed, combining to get the next three outs and Justin Lee shut the Cougars out in the ninth to earn his second win of the campaign.
ย
Roch Cholowsky recorded his third multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. UCLA's shortstop, who has a hit in all six contests to start the season, is hitting .450 with nine runs scored and five RBI.
ย
AJ Salgado came through with an important swing in the bottom of the eighth, lacing a two-run double in the gap to bring the Bruins within two. Mulivai Levu, Cameron Kim, Blake Balsz, Dean West, and Hocking each registered a hit in the contest.
ย
Phoenix Call extended his hitting streak to four games with another 1-for-3 day at the plate.
ย
Washington State (0-6) scored first, using a sacrifice fly to take an early lead in its first turn at the plate. In the second frame, the Cougars banged out three extra base hits with two outs to fuel a three-run inning, extending their lead to four.
ย
After going without a baserunner for two straight innings to start the ballgame, Phoenix Call finally broke the dry spell with a sharp line drive to left field to lead off the UCLA third. Cholowsky gave the Bruins their first run, coming up with a two-out RBI base hit to cut the deficit.
ย
WSU immediately replied, however, with a pair of runs in the fifth to make it a five-run lead.
ย
Cal Randall took over for starting pitcher Ian May in the fifth. May was tabbed with a no-decision, surrendering four runs (one earned) on seven hits in his four innings of work.
ย
The Bruins drew within striking distance when they scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff double from Cholowsky ignited the rally before Levu grounded a single through the right side. Roman Martin lifted a sacrifice fly to plate a run, and with two outs, AJ Salgado ripped a two-RBI double into the gap to whittle the Washington State lead to two runs.
ย
The last-inning heroics began with a leadoff walk from Balsz, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dean West then lined a base hit to center field, putting runners at the corners with no outs.
ย
Cholowsky walked to load the bases, and Logan de Groot, in a pinch-hitting role, was hit by a pitch, bringing the Bruins within one. Just one pitch later, Roman Martin was also hit by a fastball, tying the game at 6-6 with the bases still loaded and no outs.
ย
Hocking worked the count full in the final at-bat before taking a fastball off the inside corner, driving in the winning run and completing the Bruins' dramatic five-run comeback.
ย
The Bruins concludes the Kleberg Bank College Classic with a contest against Michigan State tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PT (10:30 a.m. CT). The game will be available for viewing on FloSports.
